Q

What are the strengths of a questionnaire?

A

Can be cost-effective and time-effective since they can be quickly administered to large numbers of participants
When completed privately and anonymously they can provide honest data, improving reliability
The reduced involvement of the researcher reduces the risk of investigator influence on the behaviour of the participants

Q

What are the limitations of a questionnaire?

A

Response rates can be poor when administered in the absence of the researcher
It can be difficult to generalise the findings
It may be that only certain people return them e.g. Those who have time or are motivated so results could only represent a certain type of person
It may be difficult to phrase questions in ways that are not open to interpretation by the participants

What are the strengths of a structured interview?

A

Due to all participants having the same questions, it is possible to compare responses and thus identify trends and patterns

17
Q

What are the limitations of structured interviews?

A

More time consuming than a questionnaire and often with little additional benefit

The information gathered is difficult to analyse objectively
There is an increased risk of interviewer bias
Requires considerable skills on the part of the interviewer to be done well
