Presentation Of Quantitative Data(RM) Flashcards
What is a histogram?
A graph used to present data that is continuous and occurs as a frequency
What are histograms an alternative to?
Line graphs as they represent continuous data
When are histograms useful?
When there is a large range of data which can be grouped together and represented by one bar
What is each group of scores known as on a histogram?
A class interval
What is a line graph used for?
Used to represent data in a numerical form (continuous data)
How would you draw a line graph?
Scale of measurement on X axis
Frequency of each score on Y axis (represented by point on a graph)
When all points plotted join them up (showing continuous data)
What are the strengths of a line graph?
Used to make estimations
Easier to read if thereโs two sets of data on the same axis
What is a bar chart used for?
Used to represent data divided into categories (discrete data)
How does a bar graph work?
Each bar = different category from x axis
Frequency=measured on y axis (height of the bar)
What happens on a bar graph if a category is not chosen or observed?
Should still be represented on a bar graph to show that itโs had a frequency of 0
What do tables do?
Summarise participants scores but doesnโt represent them individually
For data to be put into a table what has to happen?
The psychologist will have to calculate appropriate measures of central tendency and dispersion
How should tables be labelled?
In such a way that makes them straightforward to read and gives the data some meaning
What are scattergrams used for?
To represent the relationship between 2 variables as opposed to displaying differences
How do both variables need to be measured to use a scattergram?
On a numerical scale
