Correlations(RM) Flashcards
What is a correlation?
An analysis of the relationship between co-variables
What are the strengths of correlation?
Corrélations allow researchers to investigate situations that could not be done experimentally
Corrélations do not just indicate a relationship but the strength of that relationships
What are the limitations of correlations?
Corrélations are seriously affected by sample size- the smaller the sample the less accurate the co-efficient
Corrélations cannot reliable establish cause and effect
They only work for linear relationships they do not wok for curvilinear ones
What is a positive correlation?
When as one variable increases, the other variable increases
e.g people of less attractiveness tend to choose less attractive dates
What is a negative correlation?
When as one variable increases the other variable decreases
E.g the more people are vaccinated for a specific illness, the less that illness occurs
What is a curvilinear correlation?
When there is both a positive and negative relationship between the two variables , creating a curve e.g as temperature increases so do levels of agression but as temperature continues to increase levels of agression decrease
What is a zero-correlation?
Where there is no clear relationship between variables
E.g. there is no relationship between intelligence and amount of ice crease consumed
How are corrélations shown?
On scattergrams and a Like If best fit should be drawn to display the type or correlation
