+ no researcher needed, posted or email
+ statistical analysis- easily put into graphs, quantifiable data
Limitations of questionnaires
-demand characteristics, social desirability bias, not truthful to be seen in a positive light
-researcher bias, respond in a similar way, always a yes, favoured end of rating scale

Pre determined questions
Fixed order
Unstructured interview
Like a conversation
No set questions
Free flowing
Semi structured interview
Set questions but interviewer is free to follow up with questions
Designing an interview
List of questions
Standardised to reduce interviewer bias
Interviewer records answers/ analyses lates
Consider ethical issues
Strength and limitation of structured interview
+ straightforward to replicate due to standardisation
- frustration- format- unable to deviate or elaborate
Strength and limitation of unstructured interview
+ flexible- follow up points and gain insight
- analysis of data difficult- lots of irrelevant data
- social desirability bias- however good interviewer should be able to establish rapport and gain truthful answers
