Sampling Flashcards
Population
Large group of people the researcher is interested in studying
Sample
Smaller group from the target population
Random sampling
Everyone in target population has an equal chance on being selected
How- complete list of members from target pop- assign them numbers- random number generator
+ avoids researched bias
- unrepresentative/ selected may refuse
Systematic sampling
Every nth member is selected
How- sample frame (list of ppl)- chose nth people- interval random to reduce bias
+ avoids researched bias
- if every 4th is male, you have an all male sample
Opportunity sample
Selects anyone available and willing
How- interviews on the street
+ convenient, saves time and money
- unrepresentative/ researcher bias
Volunteer sample
Ptps self select from advert
How-advert, newspaper ect
+ easy, minimal input
- demand characteristics of self selecting
Stratified sample
Researched divided target pop into sections, each representing a key group that should be present in the final sample
+ avoids researcher bias
- sub group can’t reflect all the ways people are different
