Kinds Of Data Flashcards
Primary data
Data collected directly by the researcher for the purpose of the investigation from experiments, interviews, observations
+ authentic data from ptps themself
- time, effort, preparation
Secondary data
Data collected by someone who is not the researcher. It already exists in documents/ meta analysis
+ cheap/ easily accessed/ minimal effort
- quality unreliable/ might nog meet researchers aim
Qualitative data
Expressed in words not numbers from interviews, unstructured observations and diaries
+ detailed/ broad scope/ external validity
- subjective interpretation/ hard to analyse
Quantitative data
Expressed numerically, from experiments, statistics and questionnaires
+ objective/ simple to analyse
- narrow scope so lacks external validity
Meta analysis
Researchers combine findings from multiple studies and other research
+ high external validity- applied across populations
- publication bias as researcher can select data that will fit their aim
