Self-reflexive thought
Ability to consider one’s being as an object that is subject to objective consideration.
Egocentric
Self-to-object. Representation of changes when we move
Allocentric
Object to object. Hands are connected to arms. Doesnt change when you move
Self-awareness
Social/emotional/cognitive skills.
Fugue states: individual is unable to access self-relevant knowledge
Mark test
Used to test whether animals are self-aware when looking in the mirror.
Self-reflection
Redirection of attention to internal thoughts/feelings etc. Involves default mode of processing
Default mode network
Internal attention, activity decreases in certain regions if attention is directed to external, increases if directed inwards
Interoception
Anterior cingulate cortex (when arousal is rated) and insula,
Embodiment
Sense of being in your body, involves self location and egocentric frame of reference.
- Neglect syndrome (ignoring one side of body)
- Phantom limb (amputated limb)
- Out-of body experience (drugs/TPJ act)
