The belief that you can successfully perform a desired behaviour
Trait meaning?
The degree of certainty individuals usually possesses about their ability to succeed (personality related)
State meaning?
The belief of certainty individuals possesses at a particular moment about their ability to succeed.(situation specific)
Why is self confidence seen as multidimensional?
- ability to execute physical skills
- use psychological skills (self talk)
- physical fitness and ability to train
- apply perceptual skills
- ability to learn and improve
- ability to achieve (take orientation)
- superiority over the opposition (ego)

Positive emotions, concentration, goals, effort, game strategies, momentum, performance
How is low confidence seen?
self doubt, insecure, anxiety, hesitation, indecisive, mistakes, lack focus
How is high confidence seen?
false confidence, cocky, selfish, show off, not take criticism, arrogant
What is self fulfilling prophecy?
Expecting something to go wrong creates a self-fulfilling prophecy
How does self fulfilling prophecy lead to failure?
Negative self-fulfilling prophecies cause negative psychological barriers to occur. The expectation of failure = actual failure

- coach forms expectations - person cues/performance information
