What is exercise psychology?
Understanding how participation in sport, exercise and physical activity affects an individuals psychological development, health and well being throughout the lifespan.
How does physical activity help us?
Prevents noncommunicable diseases, reduces depression/anxiety, enhances thinking/learning. judgement skills, ensures healthy growth and development, improves overall wellbeing
What is cognitive change process?
involves changes in the way people think and feel about their exercise.
What is behavioural change process?
involve people making changes to their actual exercise behaviour.
What is behavioural attitude?
the degree to which a person has a favourable or unfavourable evaluation or appraisal of the behaviour.
What is subjective norms?
perceived social pressure to perform or not to perform the behaviour.
What is perceived behavioural control?
Perceived ease or difficulty of performing the behaviour.
What are the stages of the transtheoretical model?
precontemplation, contemplation, preparation, action, maintenance, termination
What does precontemplation involve?
individual does not intend to change their behaviour in the foreseeable future (6 months)
What does contemplation involve?
Intend to exercise within the next 6 months. Thoughts about starting to exercise but unlikely to act.
What does preparation stage involve?
Start to exercise but not regularly to see benefits. Plan to make behaviour changes.
What does the action stage involve?
exercise regularly, less than 6 months in, have changed behaviour.
What does maintenance stage involve?
exercising regularly for 6 months, intrinsically motivated, more likely to maintain regular exercise.
What does termination stage involve?
No desire to return back to unhealthy behaviours. 5 years in
What does the social-ecological model consider?
community, organisations, culture, policies as well as the constructed and natural environments
