self-image = pictures we have about ourselves in our minds, our abilities, looks, personality + how we think others see us.

A

Media, environment, friends and peers, family, culture, religion and our community

1 - Media
some messages in the media show real things that can shape the way we think of important things. others show unrealistic images that can make us feel that we will never be worth anything unless we are like those unrealistic images.

we can be motivated by seeing / reading articles about successful people

2 - Environment
everything around us is our environment. it can have a negative / positive effect on our self-concept and motivation.

3 - Friends and peers
friends are very important during teenage years. Peers play an important role in our lives, as we shape our identity and self-concept based on our peer group.

4 - Family
- loving family = positive influence on self-concept formation

5 - Culture
- differ cultures place differ roles on adolescents

6 - Religion

  • religions set guidelines by which to live or lives
  • the sense of belonging to a group

7 - Community
- ubuntu = a person is a person because of other people

  • can affect how easily you can change bad habits
