explain the 5 factors that influence our personal food choices and give examples for each.

A

1 - Ecological
where we live affects what crops grow and what food is available.
E.g. - people who live close to sea may have more fish in diet. those living in city may eat more take-aways than those in a rural area.

2 - Social
social setting we’re in can affect what we choose to eat.
E.g. - you may choose to eat hamburgers + chips with friends but chicken and potatoes at home with your family.

3 - Economic
we eat what we can afford + what’s available locally. some types food more expensive than others.
E.g. - some people spend their money on buying take-aways and ready-made meals / eating in restaurants, others mostly prepare food at home.

4 - Cultural
your culture gives guidelines about what food should be eaten, what foods can be mixed together, when to eat and how to eat. your religion can also affect your choices.
E.g. - Hindus don’t eat beef / pork; in some cultures eating with hands is acceptable and in it’s others not.

5 - Political
how much money country has, laws regarding food and trade agreements will affect what foods are available and their costs.
E.g. - country may import a lot of ready-made food which could be expensive. only have available what is grown + produced in their own country.

what are the ways to improve your diet

A

our bodies like cars. don’t put petrol in, won’t move. same with our body. for your mind and body to be healthy and work well you need to feed them properly. to do this you need to know what foods are healthy for you.

all foods have different types of nutrients. we need certain amount of different nutrients each days so that our bodies + minds grow + stay healthy. this important as there adults + children in our country who are becoming unhealthy and sick because of not eating correctly.

how much of each types of food should you eat at every meal

A
  • half plate filled with fruit + vegetables at every meal. veg can be raw / cooked.
  • grains food made from wheat, rice, oats / maize, e.g. pasta, rice / samp. depending on your age, eat 5 - 8 servings day. serving of grains = 1 slice bread, 1 cup cereal / half cup of rice, maize / pasta.
  • proteins foods such as meat, chicken, fish, beans, eggs, nuts and seeds. depending on age, eat 5 - 6 servings day. serving of protein = 1 egg, 1 cup beans / small piece of chicken, meat fish.
  • dairy products made from milk, e.g milk, cheese + yogurt. eat about 3 servings day. a dairy serving = small pot yogurt, 2 thirds of cup of cheese / 1 cup of milk / amazi.
  • oil is fat that’s liquid at room temperature, e.g. oil, peanut butter, mayonnaise. provides important nutrients, but too much fat increase risk of heart disease. eat 5 - 6 servings day. 2 tablespoons of peanut butter = four servings; half avocado = 3 servings; tablespoon of mayonnaise = 2 servings of fat.

A

grains - carbohydrate - gives body energy

meat, fish, beans - protein - repairs body

fruit and vegetables - vitamins and minerals - helps our bodies grow and develop

fats, oils and sugar - fats and sugar - good for energy but too much is unhealthy

dairy - calcium - builds strong teeth and bones
