newspaper + magazines often have articles on careers + general career advice. many colleges + tertiary institutions advertise their courses in newspaper + magazines. the classified section often has job advertisements under heading ‘Situations Vacant’ or ‘Employment’. these advertisements provide career information as they describe the duties of the position advertised, the abilities and interests needed and the qualifications required.
information on the internet:
internet is another valuable source of career information. there many websites that will recommend list of careers after you do test. most these sites free charge. if you type in keywords such as “careers”, “career choice” or “career information”, you’ll find information on many different careers. if you don’t have the Internet at home / school, you can try local library.

what are the 8 things you need to know about your job and describe them
1 - dress code for the career
- different careers have different dress codes. people in same career often dress similarly. their clothing usually be practical for their job. sometimes people can be identified in their work by clothing they wear, e.g., nurse’s uniform. accountant usually wears smart office clothes such as suits for both men + women. sports coach / a Physical Education teacher needs wear sportswear like tracksuits and running shoes. game ranger wears khaki shorts, a collared khaki shirt, socks and boots.
2 - tools or working equipment for the career
- many jobs performed using certain tools + equipment. tools are important part of work and you need to use well to be good at the job. chef uses different knives; an artist may use paintbrushes and an easel; hairdressers use scissors + brushes; mechanic uses specific tools and a scientist may use a microscope.
3 - work activities and work environment:
- work environment is the place where the work most commonly takes place. teacher teaches learners in classroom, and a pathologist examines samples under a microscope in a laboratory.
4 - place or institution of employment:
- government employs large range of people in different careers: librarians, chauffeurs, pharmacists, pilots, teachers, nurses, soldiers, engineers, police, administrative workers, politicians, agricultural advisers and town planners.
- businesses that employ others are owned either by an individual or a group of people. businesses in SA employ all types of professionals: tour guides, film directors, actors, translators, receptionists, secretaries, disc jockeys, publishers, opticians, game rangers, mechanics, accountants, welders, life savers, chefs, bookkeepers, dentists, butchers and many more.
- many people in many different careers are self-employed: doctors, plumbers, artists, musicians, veterinarians, hairdressers créche owners, farmers, psychologists, photographers and lawyers. many people have businesses where they buy + sell goods. others making things. some offer services like car washes, child care, cleaning services, building, security and cleaning.
5 - personal characteristics:
- your personality is a guide for career choice. are you patient, a good listener and good with people? are you careful, accurate, organised, do you keep careful records and organised information? do you like to be active and outdoors?
6 - school subjects and level of schooling
- it is important to keep your career options open. you must choose subjects in which you have ability so that you able achieve good results. making a wise subject choice, completing Gr 12 and achieving a NSC will keep your career options open.
7 - where to study and duration of study
- we have colleges, universities and universities of technology that offer tertiary (after school) education in all our major cities. there are also Further Education and Training (FET) colleges. you should attend their Open Days to see what on offer.
- courses vary in length: anything from few weeks to 7 years. you should also find out what the courses fees are so that you can concentrate on studies and not worry about finances.
8 - related careers
- most jobs and careers have “relatives”. these are groups careers have something common. e.g.: sports coach, Physical Education teacher, physiotherapist, personal trainer, sports doctor and sports dietician all have sport in common. this gives greater chance of being employed.
meaning: physiotherapist, personal trainer, dietician and a pathologist
physiotherapist - someone who treats physical injury using special exercises and touching the muscles and joints of the injured person
personal trainer - someone that helps others to get fit by showing them how to exercise
dietician - someone who advises others on how to eat to be healthy
pathologist - a scientist who studies human blood cells to see what is wrong with someone
describe what it means to work for personal fulfilment
although payment is very important, we also get other important rewards from our work. work make us happy and can make us feel useful. some people, this so important that they are prepared to work free of charge as volunteers. when we can become good at our work, we feel sense of pride and achievement. work can help us feel good about ourselves and give us opportunities to develop our strengths and talents.
