Seizures Flashcards
1
Q
Generalized Seizures
A
- Type of seizure that involves the entire cerebral cortex
2
Q
Partial Seizures
A
- Type of seizure that begins in a single location and then either spreads through the cortex or remains limited to one area of the cortex
3
Q
Mixed Seizure Disorder
A
- Occurs when a person experiences both generalized and partial seizures
4
Q
Infantile Spasms
A
- Spasms begin between ages 6 and 24 months
- Development stops or slows considerably
- Some skills may be lost
5
Q
Tonic-clonic Seizure
A
- Most frequent type of generalized seizure
- Child experiences a sensation that the seizure is about to begin (aura)
- Usually followed by two stages:
1. A loss of consciousness
2. Rhythmic clonic contractions - May last as long as 5 minutes and incontinence is common
- Child may be drowsy or sleep for the next 1-2 hours
- Aka “grand mal seizure”
6
Q
Absence Seizures
A
- Type of generalized seizure
- A brief lapse or loss of awareness along with the absence of motor activity
- Typically lasts less than 15 seconds and may be mistaken for daydreaming
7
Q
Myoclonic Seizures
A
- Type of generalized seizure
- Contractions of a single muscles or muscle groups
8
Q
Akinetic Seizures
A
- Type of generalized seizure
- Loss of muscle tone for less than 30 seconds
9
Q
Status Epilepticus
A
- Type of generalized seizure
- Extended seizures
- Requires prompt medical intervention to maintain body functions and hydration
10
Q
Complex Partial Seizures
A
- Type of partial seizure
- Originates in the temporal lobe
- Appears as lip smacking, chewing, or buttoning/unbuttoning clothing
- Also displays characteristics similar to absence seizures
11
Q
Simple Partial Seizures
A
- Type of partial seizure
- Originate in the motor cortex
- Result in clonic activity of the face or extremities
- Child may also experience visual or auditory hallucinations or olfactory sensations
