Suppression
A
- Allows an individual to divert uncomfortable feelings into socially acceptable feelings in order to avoid thinking about a disturbing issue
- Example: Focusing on plans to go clothes shopping (desirable, socially acceptable feelings), to avoid thinking about a scheduled bilateral LE amputation (uncomfortable, disturbing issue/feelings).

A
- Returning to an earlier stage of development to avoid tension or conflict
- Example: An individual becomes needy or child-like during a period of stresss

A
- The redirection of an emotion or reaction from one object to a similar but less threatening one
- Example: A child who is angry with their parents yells at a younger sibling (“Chain of Screaming”)

- The attribution of unacknowledged characteristics or thoughts to others
- Example: Someone who feels guilty interprets the statements of others as blaming them
