Seed Flashcards
Definition of Seed
Fertilized egg which grow into a zygote which grows into a plant embryo
Endosperm
Stored food tissue for the embryo to grow
Mature ibile becomes what..?
- The seed coat or
- The fruit or
- The seed coat & the fruit
Parts of the seed
- Embryo (from the zygote)
- Endosperm (may or may not be present in mature seed)
- Seed coat(from integuments)
Where does the seed come from.?
- By Double Fertilization
• Fusion of egg & sperm(Zygote)
• Fusion of two polar nuclei with second sperm(endosperm)
Kinds Of Seeds
- Dicots(Here, endosperm is partially or completely absorbed by the embryo by cotyledons)
- Monocots(Here, the endosperm is a discrete, major structural seed unit)
Seed Components
- Seed coat (External Structure)
- Embryo
- Stored food and mineral reserves
- Enzymes & Hormones (Found everywhere)
DICOTS
A. Under the seed;
1. Hilium means
2. Micropyle means
B. Under the Embryo Axis;
1. Plumule means
2. Epicotyl means
3. Hypocotyl means
Radicle is.?
Under the seed;
1. Hilium means the place where seed was attached to plant.
2. Micropyle means small opening in the integuments
B. Under the Embryo Axis;
1. Plumule means shoot apex, first foliage leaves & Epicotyl
2. Epicotyl means portion beneath leaves
3. Hypocotyl means the portion beneath cotyledonary node; Root/Shoot junction
Radicle is the primary root
MONOCOTS
Under the seed;
1. Pericarp means..?
2. Aleurone layer is..?
B. Under the Embryo Axis;
1. Plumule means
2. Epicotyl means
3. Hypocotyl means
4. Coleoptile means
Scutellum is.?
Radicle is..?
Coleorhiza is..?
- Pericarp means the fruit wall developed from the ovary wall.
- Aleurone layer is the protein-rich layer which encases the endosperm.
B. Under the Embryo Axis;
1. Plumule means shoot apex, first foliage leaves; and epicotyl
2. Epicotyl means the portion beneath the leaves
3. Hypocotyl means the portion beneath cotyledonary node; Root/Shoot junction
4. Coleoptile means the protective sheath around the shoot apex.
Scutellum means one cotyledon
Radicle is the primary root
Coleorhiza is the protective sheath around the root apex
