Class Mammals Flashcards
Mammals are the most … and … group of animals; they include…. (also called…)
Mammals are the most advanced and higher group of animals; they include animals that make use of tools (also called Primates)
General Characteristics Of Mammals
In terms of body temperature
In terms of heart chamber
In terms of red blood cells
In terms of their skin
In terms of internal cavity
They are warm blooded animals(homeothermic)
They have four chambered heart: two auricles & ventricles each
They have red blood cells are disc shape and non-nucleated
Their skin is covered with hair and has 2 types of glands: Sebaceous & Sweat glands
Their interval cavity is divided into chest and abdomen by a muscle called diaphragm
General Characteristics Of Mammals
In terms of type of reproduction & fertilization
In terms of mode of reproduction
In terms of parental care
In terms of brain development
Their reproduction is sexual and fertilization is internal.
They have viviparous mode of reproduction
They show parental care to the young ones
They have well developed brain and they seem to be the most capable learners
General Characteristics Of Mammals
In terms of respiratory organs
In terms of cavities
In terms of ears
In terms of teeth
Their respiratory organs are lung.
Buccal cavity is separated from nasal cavity by secondary plate.
They have external ears called Pinnae; middle and inner ears are also present; middle ear has 3 ossicles
Mammals have 4 types of teeth- incisors, canine, premolars and molars which allow them to feed efficiently
Types Of Mammals
- Monotremes
- Marsupials
- Placentals
Placentals
A group of mammals whose young ones complete their embryonic development attached to a placenta inside the mother uterus.
They are the most widespread and diverse modern mammals
E.g Rodents, Primates
Monotremes
They are the egg laying mammals
E.g Platypuses and Echnidas found in Australia and New Guinea
Marsupials
They are animals whose young ones complete their embryonic development inside a maternal pouch; the marsupium
E.g Opossums, Kangaroos and Koalas found in Australia.
