Section 4 Flashcards
What are protein domains?
Small sections that cofactors bind to
What is NAD+?
Niacin (Vit. B3)
What reaction is catalyzed by lactate dehydrogenase?
Lactate -> Pyruvate -> Repeat
What is a hexokinase?
Enzyme that phosphorylates glucose
Where do hydrophobic amino acids tend to be at?
Interior of a protein
What is a ligand-binding domain?
Responsible for hormone binding
What is a G protein?
Binds to GDP or GTP
What is the function of myoglobin?
Brings oxygen to heart and skeletal muscles
What is the function of hemoglobin
Brings oxygen to tissues via RBC
Which have a higher saturation w/ oxygen, hemoglobin or myoglobin?
Myoglobin (due to its quaternary structure)
What is the function of heme?
Bind to oxygen
What is bilirubin?
Degraded hemoglobin that is excreted in bile
What is conjugated bilirubin?
When sugar attaches to unconjugated bilirubin that is formed in the liver
What does a point mutation involve?
A replacement of hemoglobin glutamic residue with a valine residue
What is the result of a point mutation?
Sickled red blood cells
