Section 10F - Full Range Leadership Development (FRLD) Flashcards
Why is developing a full range of leadership potential throughout the workforce a principal Air Force initiative?
Todays Air Force depends on highly effective Airmen who can flexibly and capably operate throughout a spectrum of leadership styles. Full Range Leadership Development (FRLD) combines the best parts of past leadership theories to meet this need.
What are the three most interdependent core elements of the Full Range Leadership Development (FRLD) system?
1) The leader; 2) the follower; and 3) the situation.
After considering the needs of the follower and the situation, leaders must be willing to 1) develop relationships with leadership, peers and subordinates; 2) take advantage of available opportunities; and 3) use available resources efficiently. Identify three more requirements.
4) Properly evaluate situations and follower performance; 5) reward appropriately and discipline accordingly; and 6) identify improvement areas in one’s self, followers and workplace.
The Full Range Leadership Development (FRLD) model includes five leadership behaviors. Name them.
1) Laissez-Faire; 2) Management by Exception-Passive; 3) Management by Exception-Active; 4) Transactional Leadership and Contingent Rewards; and 5) Transformational Leadership.
Which leadership behavior describes leaders who view the development and needs of their subordinates as someone else’s concern, often displaying indifference and hesitation to make decisions?
Laissez-Faire.
Which leadership behavior operates by the “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it” theory, intervening only when policies or rules are broken?
Management by Exception-Passive.
Why is the Management by Exception-Passive leadership behavior more effective than Laissez-Faire?
Subordinates know that leadership will hold them accountability if they fail to meet performance standards or comply with policies and procedures.
Which leadership behavior ensures control by monitoring and governing subordinates through forced compliance with rules, regulations and expectations for meeting performance standards?
Management by Exception-Active.
Management by Exception-Active is a ____ leadership system that uses detailed instructions, careful observation and active supervision.
Structured. (This system reduces organizational uncertainties, avoids unnecessary risk and ensures important goals are achieved.)
In the Transactional Leadership and Contingent Rewards leadership style, what is the role between a leader and his or her followers?
The leader established a “contract” (transaction) to set goals, identify ways for the subordinate to reach the goals and supports the follower along the way. The follower then successfully performs the assigned tasks, meets the leader’s expectations and receives a reward.
Which leadership behavior inspires followers to exceed their goals and promotes positive, meaningful changes?
Transformational Leadership. (These leaders offer followers a vision and inspire their mission.)
Identify the four components or “4 Is” of transformational leadership.
1) Individualized Consideration; 2) Intellectual Stimulation; 3) Inspirational Motivation; and 4) Idealized Influence.
Which “4 Is” transformational leadership component involves empathy and nurturing, where the leader acts as a mentor or coach?
Individualized Consideration.
The transformational leader uses which “4 Is” component to stimulate and encourage creativity and independent thinking among followers?
Intellectual Stimulation, the “thinking” component.
Describe the behavior of a transformational leader using the Inspirational Motivations component.
This “charming” leader develops and articulates his or her visions of an appealing and inspiring future, which encourages followers to put forth extra effort to achieve the leaders’ vision.
