seborrheic dermatitis Flashcards
What is the primary organism associated with seborrhoeic dermatitis?
The proliferation of the Malassezia yeast genus is believed to play a significant role in seborrhoeic dermatitis.
What role does Malassezia yeast play in seborrhoeic dermatitis?
Malassezia produces lipases and phospholipases that cleave free fatty acids from triglycerides in sebum, which may induce inflammation.
What is a common name for infantile seborrhoeic dermatitis affecting the scalp?
Cradle cap
Which areas besides the scalp can be affected by infantile seborrhoeic dermatitis?
The rash may spread to armpit and groin folds, causing a type of napkin dermatitis.
What is the appearance of the skin patches in infantile seborrhoeic dermatitis
The patches are salmon-pink and may flake or peel.
What areas are commonly affected by adult seborrhoeic dermatitis?
Areas with high sebum production, such as the scalp, nasolabial folds, glabella, eyebrows, beard, ears, retroauricular skin, sternum, and other skin folds.
What type of moisturizer is recommended for seborrhoeic eczema?
Use a non-greasy or no moisturizer, and stop using Vaseline.
What is a common treatment for minor lesions of seborrhoeic eczema on the face and scalp?
An imidazole cream twice daily, possibly combined with hydrocortisone, or sulfur 3-5% cream.
What can be used for chronic scaling in seborrhoeic eczema?
Salicylic acid 2-5% ointment or sulfur 2-5% ointment.
How should acute and severe widespread lesions be treated?
Use hydrocortisone cream once or twice daily, an imidazole cream twice daily, and consider oral ketoconazole 200 mg.
What is the nighttime treatment for chronic recurrent widespread lesions?
Apply coal tar 2-6% in zinc paste or coal tar ointment, or coal tar + sulfur 5-10% ointment (avoid on wet lesions).
What is the daytime treatment for chronic recurrent widespread lesions?
Use hydrocortisone cream or betamethasone cream once daily, and/or an imidazole cream twice daily.
How can dry scaling lesions be treated?
Apply salicylic acid 2% or 5% ointment twice daily.
What systemic treatment can be added for severe seborrhoeic eczema?
Low-dose oral ketoconazole
