What is post-herpetic neuralgia?
Post-herpetic neuralgia is a persistent burning sensation or pain in the area that has healed, occurring in over 10% of patients. It can last from a few months to many years.
What is the recommended analgesia for Herpes Zoster?
NSAIDs, such as indomethacin 25 mg 3 times daily or ibuprofen 400 mg 3 times daily, are recommended for pain relief
What topical treatments are recommended during the vesicular stages of Herpes Zoster?
Calamine or phenol-zinc lotion is recommended for the vesicular stages.
How should Herpes Zoster be managed in immunocompromised persons?
Administer acyclovir 800 mg 5 times daily for 1 week, starting early in the course of the disease.
Alternatively, use another antiviral like valaciclovir.
How is postherpetic neuralgia managed in Herpes Zoster?
Apply 3 to 5% phenol in cream or ointment 2-6 times daily.
Amitriptyline 75 mg nightly.
Carbamazepine 600-800 mg once daily.
Alternatively, use Amitriptyline 75 mg nightly + Thioridazine 25 mg 4 times daily.
Try any of these treatments for at least 4-6 weeks before deciding their effectiveness.
