What causes Chickenpox (Varicella)?
Chickenpox, or varicella, is a primary infection caused by the varicella-zoster virus.
Describe the prodromal symptoms of Chickenpox.
Mild prodrome with symptoms like fever and malaise. The exanthema (rash) appears suddenly after this phase.
What is the progression of lesions in Chickenpox?
Lesions start as red macules, progress to papules, then vesicles, pustules, and eventually crusts.
Lesions typically appear on the trunk, scalp, and mucous membranes, and less so on extremities and face.
What are possible complications of Chickenpox?
Possible complications include nephritis, myositis, otitis, and meningoencephalitis.
What topical treatments are recommended for itch and drying in Chickenpox?
Calamine lotion or phenol-zinc lotion as necessary for itch and drying in.
How is extreme itch managed in Chickenpox?
Antihistamines can be used to manage extreme itch.
What is the recommended antiviral treatment for immunocompromised patients with Chickenpox?
Acyclovir 200-800 mg, 5 times daily for 5-10 days, if available.
