Search and Kill Stores Flashcards
What are the safety procedures concerning the sonobuoy safety switch?
Ensure the sonobuoy safety switch door is open, the switch is fully extended and the SONO DISABLED light in the flight station is on.
What safety precautions must be taken when operating the Bomb Bay Doors?
The door switch should match the door position. An outside observer should be placed and no action will be taken if the observer is out of sight.
What are search stores?
Deployable stores used in searching and localizing submarine targets.
What types of sonobuoys are there?
Active, passive and special purpose.
What are active sonobuoys?
Mini-sonars that “ping” for submarines and transmit the info to the aircraft.
What are passive sonobuoys?
Hydrophone that passively listens to all the sounds in the water.
What are special purpose sonobuoys?
Bathythermograph (BT) sonobuoys that measure the oceans temperature.
What are the Sonobuoy Launch Tubes (SLTs)?
The 48 tubes on the bottom of the fuselage used to load and launch sonobuoys.
What are the Pressurized Sonobuoy Launch Tubes (PSLTs)?
3 pressurized tubes inside the A/C where sonobuoys are loaded and launched.
What is the Free Fall Chute?
A single chute behind the 3 PSLTs. Consists of a protective sleeve that eliminated the damage to the under section of the A/C.
What are Kill Stores?
Torpedoes, mines, bombs, rockets and guided missiles.
What are Signal Underwater Sound (SUS)?
A sea water activated signaling device used to communicate with submerged subs during exercises.
What are Pyrotechnics?
Fireworks used to produce bright lights or smoke for signaling.
What are Marine Location Markers (MLM)?
Dropped to provide visual markings on the oceans surface.
What are pylons used for?
Used to suspend launchers or bomb racks.
