Hazardous Material/Waste Fundamentals Flashcards
Define Hazardous Waste.
Any discarded hazardous material or anything considered hazardous waste by EPA or the State.
Define Hazardous Material.
Material that may pose a hazard to human health or the environment if released or spilled.
What are the HM storage and inspection requirements?
Stowage locations are inspected weekly and quarterly for tightness of closure, corrosion, leaking, proper labels and expiration.
What information is on the Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS)?
Composition, chemical, physical characteristics, hazards, precautions for handling/use.
What are 6 catagories of HM?
- Aerosol containers
- Compressed gases
- Corrosive materials
- Flammable/combustible materials
- Oxidizing materials
- Toxic materials
What are the 11 steps in the general procedures of a HM/HW spill?
- discover 2. notify 3. initiate action 4. evaluate 5. contain 6. damage control 7. disperse gas/vapors 8. clean up and decontaminate 9. dispose 10. certify re-entry 11. follow up report
What PPE is required when handling HM/HW?
Eye protection, respiratory devices, gloves
Disposal of adhesives (rags, absorbents and applicators).
Store as a flammable waste in an approved container.
Disposal of grease.
Store in an approved container, the original container or a doubled plastic bag. keep synthetic and organic grease separate.
Disposal of hydraulic fluid.
Store in an approved waste container. keep synthetic and organic fluids separate.
Disposal of fuels.
Store in designated tanks or approved containers. Rags and absorbent materials are stored in a flame resistant container.
Disposal of waste oils.
All non-buoyant, solid waste can be thrown overboard beyond 50NM from shore. Otherwise it must be stored in an approved waste container.
Disposal of paint and paint thinner.
Store in the original container or a flame resistant container.
What 6 things are required training for all hands with respect to the HM/HW program?
- types of HM in their work area
- what HM is and how to dispose of it
- how to read and interpret hazard warning labels
- how to read and find the MSDS
- the protective measure when handling HM
- emergency procedures
What is the purpose of secondary labeling of HM when removed from the original container?
so that subsequent containers are marked with precautionary labels.
