science and medicine: blood transfusions, magic bullets and the work of Ehrlich, radioactivity and the impact of Marie Curie. Flashcards

1
Q

What happened in 1901 for blood transfusions?

A

Q

What did paul erlich do

A

A former member of Koch’s team and Behring. From this he knew how to seperate and study microorganisms under microscopes and that there were microorganisms out there that could attack specific diseases. He dreamt of combining the two to kill syphillus.

Q

What could x rays do

A

It could help show the details of broken bones so they could be set properly, show doctors where shrapnels were being highly in demand during war, and identifying tumours.

Q

How did Mariah Curie lead the research on using radioactivity for other means.

A

1910 when a new raidum institute was created for her she used the resources to kill or shrink tumors first by putting radium close to tumours. then just inserting radium into the tumors. This is the basics of radiotherapy today to kill cancer
