Pasteur the development of germ theory and effects 1860 Flashcards
Who was Pasteur
A french chemist
When did Pasteur become aware of microorganisms causing decay
When hired to study how beer turned sour. With the help of the improved technology better microscopes noticed microorganisms in the beer after it turned sour
How did Pasteur discover pasteurisation
In attempting to kill the microorganisms in beer he heated the liquid and the beer wasn’t sour anymore.
How did Pasteur disprove the spontaneous generation theory.
he left a mixture in open and it turned bad because there was microorganisms in it. If he heated it and then prevented air from reaching it then it wouldn’t turn bad.
How did his experiment to disprove spontaneous generation work
It proved decaying material wasn’t causing microorganisms but microorganisms causing decaying material. This theory is named “Germ Theory”
4 principles of germ theory
- Microorganisms in the air aren’t evenly distributed
- Microorganisms in the air caused decay
- Microorganisms can be killed by heating them
- Air contains living microorganisms
How did Pasteur link microorganisms and disease with Germ Theory
When in charge of discovering why silk worms were sick, he found a specific microorganism causing the disease
Why is Germ Theory significant?
It explained the link of hygiene and health. led to the identification of microorganisms that caused diseases and led to the path of vaccinations against those microorganisms
