What was the Scutari Hospital like
Infested with rats and mice, had diseases like typhoid fever and cholera, clothes were infested with lice and fleas, had many patients with diarrhoea, crowded with many patients sharing beds, and had a contaminated water supply
What did Nightingale change in the hospital
She scrubbed floors clean, opened windows, and washed all equipment because she believed in miasma
Did Nightingale change opinions on nursing
Yes she did, she proved male army doctors women could cope with the conditions and had medical knowledge
What was Nightingale known for
“The lady with the lamp” She would personally check on patients at night
Did Florence Nightingale help change the situation in the scutari hospital
No, despite her improvements the death rates in the hospital were still higher than other hospitals. This was due to the unsanitary supply of water. The death rate only fell when the government repaired the drain polluting the water from the cesspool (an underground container for the temporary storage of liquid waste and sewage.)
