Schizophrenia- ID cognitive approach Flashcards
What does the cog approach ?
Offers multiple different behaviour explanations for positive and negative symptoms
What are the 3 components?
-Maladaptive thinking
-Lack of preconscious filters
-Beck’s cognitive triad
What does Morrison say about maladaptive thinking?
Triggers like sleep deprivation causes auditory hallucinations
The individual interpret these voices as the ‘devil’ is speaking to them casing social withdrawal etc
The emotional behaviour produces like sadness and shame reinforce the message offered via critical voices causing a vicious cycle
What does Frith say about the lack of pre-conscious filters (Attention deficit theory)?
SZ is a result of the breakdown of thought filtering process
-our brains constantly receive information vast amounts to the info to the world around us
-SZ is the result of the breakdown of thought filtering process
-Issues with attention, not able to efficiently filter the non perceptive infor, so inability to focus= disordered thinking, hallucination, delusion and disordered speech
Lack of pre-conscious filters- Bentall?
SZ has attentional bias towards stimuli of a threatening and emotional nature e.g. violence, pain etc and are more likely to perceive a stimulus as threatening when it isn’t
-This can explain delusions of persecutions and reference
What symptoms does lack of preconscious filters explain?
Positive symptoms
What is Becks cognitive triad?
Cognitive research into SZ used to explain depression, to explain development of SZ
-Negative view of self: dysfunction belief’s around their performance and ability to explain pleasures
-Future: people with SZ and hold a negative gloomy viewed future
-Dysfunctional future only allow negative message to be perceived
Example of the cognitive triad?
The cog triad (negative view of)
