Scales of Production Flashcards
What is a prototype
An early sample or model of a product in order to test specific spect of a design such as operation or shape.
As the design process continues, increasing amount of…………….are produced
Prototypes
Why are prototypes expensive
Because the cost of production are absorbed into just one price instead of being spread between lots of the same thing
What is bespoke production
When a product is made for a specific situation or client and only one of them is ever made
What is a bespoke product
Includes everything that the client wants as well as the specific features the craftsperson or manufacturer brings to the product
Why are bespoke products expensive
Tools and skills are specific to the end
High labour intensive because every product is different
What is one off production
Where just one complete product is produced
Often includes parts of bespoke elements as well as mass produced parts that combine to form just on product
e.g, Cruise liner, bridge, power station
What is batch production
Whee a limited number of the same product is made during a particular time period
The number of units in a batch is determined by: The product that is being made How much it costs to buy, How often it is sold The price of raw materials Cost of running the machine
What does batch production make the most of
Moulds
Patterns
Jigs
Formers
So the product can be made over and over again
What does computer controlled machinery mean for the production
Crucial to the success of modern batch production as it allows for rapid changeover between batches with little down time
In some cases, what can be used to change the operation of a machine each time it is needed
Computer
This means that a variety of a product can be produced during a single line run without stopping the line or changing the equipment
What is mass production
Manufacturing in large quantities over a long period of time. Typically uses a production line
What does mass production involve
Putting together products from sub assemblies, which are small sections of the whole product and uses standardised components
Is there a high or low smiled workforce for mass production
Low
Specialised machinery is often used but the skills to operate them are relatively low
Means cheap products
Mobile phones, clothes
What is continues production
Where an item is made continently for 24 hours per day, 7 days a week with infrequent shut downs for cleaning and maintenance
Whole process can be fully automated so no workers needed
Process is hard to change because the cost of stopping the production, so continues production is used where the demand for the same product is expected to be the same for ing time
