Production Techniques and End of Life Disposal Flashcards
What is FMS
Flexible Manufacturing Systems - A system where production is organised into cells of machines with each cell doing one specific task.
What are CNC’s
Computer Numerically Controlled Machines - Put in each cell such as a CNC miller or a CNC lathe
Give some advantages of FMS
High flexibility
Produces different products simultaneously
Set up to produce new products quickly
Saves time + effort
What is ‘Just in Time Production’
Where machines + components are ordered to arrive at the product assembly plant just in time for production (McDonalds).
Give some companies that do ‘Just In Time Production’
Nissan
Toyota
Dell
Give some advantages of ‘Just in Time Production’
Helps keep manufacturing lean (reduces waste)
Reduced need to keep large scale stockpiles
Smaller number of finished products stored
Products do not……. ………; they……out in time and are either………., ………….. or thrown away
Last Forever
Wear
Recycled
Reused
What is planned obsolescence
It’s better for the environment if rather than replacing a product at relatively short intervals, that a product has a longer lifespan.
However, a longer lifespan means fewer products sold, so some manufacturing companies design products that have a short life.
They do this so they will become obsolete (unfashionable, or they will no longer function over a long period if time).
The companies produce new and improved products at short intervals (Apple)
Why do some companies do planned obsolescence
Technology is always improving
Keep sales steady
What is maintenance
Performing functions that will keep functioning correctly throughout it’s life.
Give some examples of design maintenance
The facility to change batteries or allowing access into the products to replace worn out parts.
Some computers are made up of different modules so that the module can be replaced and not the computer.
Some modules can be upgraded as the technology improves
People like things that they can buy at good……..+ low………
Quality
Cost
How do some companies cut the prices on their products
Automating factories can cut workforce costs by employing fewer people but this means that some loose their jobs.
Other methods are manufacturing in a country where labour costs are lower than in the UK
Give some disadvantages of Companies cutting prices
Workers are paid less and work in poor conditions and often the pollution created may be much higher
Also environmental costs can come from transporting the products between countries.
Give the 6 R’s when thinking about the environment
Refuse Reduce Reuse Repair Recycle Re-think
