Forces and Stresses Flashcards
What sort of force is tension
Causes an object to be stretched or pulled apart
(Tug of war)
Tensile strength
What would happen if rope didn’t have tensile strength
It would snap
What are compression forces
Pushing force that squeeze an object
Give an example of compression forces
Table and chair legs are under compression
What are shear forces
Forces that act across a material by acting next to one another but not directly opposite each other
Shearing forces cuts the object by pushing it sideways in different directions
Give some examples of shear forces
Scissors and garden shears have a shearing action that cause something to e cut by making one piece slide across the other and making two pieces.
What are bending forces
They act at an angle to an object and make bit bend
When an object bends, it is under……….and…………at the same time.
Compression
Tension
Give na example of a bending force
Placing to many books on a bookshelf, causing the shelf to bend
What is torsion
Twisting forces that are applied to an object
Give an example of torsion
When you twist a screw cap of the top of a bottle, we are applying torsion.
A propeller shaft on a ship connects the ships engine to the propellor.
What are enhancing materials
Materials can be enhanced to resist and work with forces and stress to improve functionality
How can you enhance a material
They can be reinforces (strengthened), stiffened (made more rigid), or made more flexible.
Give an example of enhanced material
Ropes is made by many twines of yarns together to form a stronger material with more tensile strength.
What is good and bad with concrete
How can you improve it
Concrete is very good at resisting compressive forces, but is not very good with tension
Can be reinforced with steel bars which are embedded within the connote before it sets. (composite)
This is used in the constructive industry in bridges where there are high tensile forces and compressive loads
