large stone coffins often carved with scenes from the suffering and death of Jesus. showing a belief in the resurrection and hope of an eternal life with God.

shows Jesus being crowned with thorns. this was the soldiers way of mocking JEsus, calling him “king of Jews”. This caused adittional pain and suffering for Him. However the frown is coevred in Jewels which symbolised JEsus’ true kingship as the son of GOd

Catholics will look at the carvings on the sarcophagi and this will give them hope that they too will have an eternal life with God after they die. They will try follow the teachigns of JEsus to make sure that they have a positive judgement, and their souls can enter heaven.
