Sampling Methods| Representative Flashcards
methods that are representative of a large sample.
What is random sampling?
Selecting people based by chance e.g any race, class or gender.
Advantage of random sampling?
Lesser chance of bias; everyone has equal chance of selection.
Disadvantage of sampling?
practical..
Expensive; larger group required.
May not be representative of the target population.
What is systematic sampling?
Every nth person in sampling frame is selected.
Advantage of systematic sampling?
Beneficial to a wide study area; simple.
Disadvantage of systematic sampling?
Data= over/underrepresentation of particular patterns.
Stratified sampling?
Researcher breaks down population by class, gender, age.
Sample created in those same proportions.
Advantages of stratified sampling?
Fair representation of the population; cheap.
Disadvantages of stratified sampling?
practical..
Time consuming; not always easy to apply data.
Quota sampling?
Researcher given quote they have to complete; given participants– have to be filled out before starting another.
Advantages of quota sampling?
Cheaper; less participants, more representative.
Disadvantages of quota sampling?
Harder to eliminate bias in the selection process.
