Labelling Studies | 2 Flashcards
Mirza, Mac, Ghail and Fuller, Sewell, theories, sociologists etc.
Who did Mirza conduct her study on?
Black, ambitious girls who faced racism.
What did Mirza’s study show about the Black girls?
Teachers discouraged high aspirations from them.
- Careers, aspirations.
They did not participate in class.
What did Mirza say the ‘non-racist’ girls decided not to choose subjects because of?
Due to the racist teachers.
What were the 3 types of teacher racism, studied by Mirza?
Explain all.
1) Color blind- all pupils are equal but they ignore the practice of racism.
2) Liberal chauvinists- believe black pupils are culturally deprived and have low expectations of them.
3) Overt racist- those who believe that black pupils are inferior and discriminate against them.
How does Mirza’s study challenge the labelling theory?
- Not all students follow the self-fulfilling prophecy- they’ll reject it.
- Some have a positive self image of themselves.
What did Sewell study about the labelling studies on black boys?
How they react to negative stereotypes, which affects their achievement.
What did Sewell find about his study on black boys?

- Excluded, reject school norms and values.
Conformists- succesful black boys.
- Accept norms.
Sewell’s study:
What was the name given to black boys who were rebels?
“Black Macholads.”
How did the Conformists surround their friendship group with?
A variety of ethnic groups.
How does Sewell’s study support the labelling theory?
Different boys reacted in different ways.
There are 4 types of responses to negative labelling..
Of which of the groups accept the self-fulfilling prophecy?
Rebels & Retreitists.
Who were the retreatists?
They were disconnected from both, schools and Black subcultures.

Conformist and Innovators.
What was different about the Innovators and the Conformists?
The Innovators were pro-education but anti-school.

Gillborn and Youdell- A-C Economy.
Why was the ‘A-C Economy’ an underlying factor in Black boys’ achievement?
What was their disadvantage? Education.
The idea that through that, Black and working-class pupils would be placed in lower streams and low tier exams.
