Education Maintenance Allowance (EMA), Education Action Zones, Aim Higher Programme.
Aim Higher Programme?
Raise aspirations of underrepresented groups such as ethnic minorities- encouraged to stay away from lower jobs.
EMA?
£30/ week, financial support for children- encourage them to stay at school for FE.
EAZ?
Underperforming areas were provided with additional resources and funding e.g. better IT and teachers.
How could the policies go against the New Right?
Fatalism, w/c parental attitudes and immediate gratification.
What else did the Labour introduce?
Smaller class sizes and more numeracy and literacy hours.
Tony Blair on the ‘one size fits all’ approach?
It does not work, needed to be move to a ‘post-comprehensive’ era.
