Salmonella Flashcards
What does Salmonella bongori infect
Reptiles/cold-blooded
What does Salmonella enterica infect
Warm blooded vertebrates
Salmonella difference from E.coli
Doesn’t ferment lactose but grows on MacConkey plates- straw yellow colonies
Antigens for serotyping salmonella
K- capsule
O-lipopolysaccharide
H-flagella
What is the genetic basis for virulence of salmonella
Pathogenicity islands
What is SPI 1
Encodes the type 3 secretion system with the needle for injecting proteins into host cells
Salmonella Pathogenesis
Attach and adhere with fimbriae
Some invade cells
What are the 2 types of salmonellosis (based on target cells) and diseases they cause
M cells, which cause enteric fever and enterocytes, which cause gastroenteritis
What is enteric fever and what does it cause
Infection of lymphoid tissue where bacteria survive and replicate in macrophages and can spread all over the body (liver, spleen) which causes typhoid fever, pullorum disease, Dublin in cattle, Abortis- ovis in sheep and goats, septicemia, fever, swollen lymph nodes
What is Gastroenteritis caused by salmonella
Invading the enterocytes through the tight junctions of the intestinal mucosa causing inflammation which causes fluid secretion as a host response resulting in vomiting and diarrhea
Predisposing conditions for salmonella
Young/old/immunocompromised/shipping stress/birthing Parasites or viral infections Poor sanitation Overcrowding Over- training
