Safeworking 17 - 20 Flashcards
When will Absolute Block Working be implemented? (3)
- Track maintenance machines are required to pass through a section
- Rail traffic movement fails to be detected by the signal control system
- Any other circumstance as necessary (e.g. a bat flies into infrastructure and wipes out a whole section of signals)
What is the object of Absolute Block Working?
- Ensure only one train is in a defined section of track at any time
How will the object of Absolute Block Working be achieved?
Once a train has entered the section, the signaller sleeves the signal at Stop, and the blocking command can only be removed once the train has arrived complete at the end of the Absolute Block point
What are the two types/areas of Absolute Block Working?
- Between two adjacent controlled signalled locations
- Between a controlled absolute signal and a nominated clearance point
What classes of signals are considered to be absolute?
Home, Dwarf or Disc signal that are operated by a signaller and can be secured at Stop
How will Absolute Block Working be implemented on a Single Line section?
Prior to departure of a train into the Block Section, the opposing departure signal must be sleeved at stop. Once the train has arrived complete, the blocking facilities can be removed
What will happen if the train detection system fails under Absolute Block Working?
(i.e. they lose the train)
Everyone will poop themselves a little bit.
Signaller will ensure any controlled signals are at Stop
Train Controller will issue a REC and try to contact driver.
Driver (if able to be contacted) will be instructed to Extreme Caution it until train can be tucked away for testing
How can the driver monitor the condition of the train in running?
- Rear facing mirrors
- Body side cameras with in-cab CCTV
- Platform mounted mirrors and CCTV
When can a driver monitor the condition on the train in running?
When it is safe to do so
What are the four types of inspection that can be conducted in running?
- Front of train
- Side of train
- Platform departure
- Roll-by
What exceptions are there to pass a red hand signal at Stop?
None
What are the two things Gary said we need to remember from the Train Following Safely?
- Long, straight sections of track
- Big, sweeping curves
Who manages the overhead system?
Electrol
With loss of overhead power, how many times will Electrol try and reset the power supply?
Twice
What are the three types of section insulators?
- Fibreglass
- Porcelain
- Wood
The locations of the Tramway crossings are:
- Glenhuntley (Glenhuntley Rd)
- Riversdale (Riversdale Rd)
- Kooyong (Glenferrie Rd)
What is our authority to pass a home signal at stop when at a Tramway Square?
Signaller’s Caution Order
What does CBTC stand for?
Communication Based Train Control
What is the object of CBTC?
To enforce the continuous safe separation of trains, and to provide over-speed protection of trains
What is the area of CBTC?
Down: South Yarra Platform 5 and 6 to Clayton Platform 2
Up: Clayton Platform 1 to South Yarra Platform 5
Learn all those CBTC signs. There’s 4 of them.
Okay
What types of signalling are available in the CBTC area? (2)
- Fixed Block Signalling (conventional)
- Moving Block Signalling
What happens if a driver encounters a signal irregularity inside Mixed Mode Territory?
Contact Train Controller
What authority does a driver need to pass an irregular signal or block marker inside Mixed Mode Territory?
Who can issue it?
Alternative Proceed Authority, issued by controlling signaller at Sunshine Signal Control Centre
What speed can movements take when conducted under an Alternative Proceed Authority?
Extreme Caution
An APA can only authorise a train movement to the: (5)
- Next Fixed Signal
- Next CBTC Block Marker Board
- Disabled Train
- Buffer Light
- Station
What are the 6 Cs of CBTC rescue?
- Confer
- CBTC Isolate (HCS switch)
- Couple
- Cancel
- Continuity
- Contact
How is a disabled train running on CBTC protected?
From the rear cab, with rear marker lights on red
When is an APA cancelled? (2)
- The move is unable to be completed
- The Signaller has been assured the movement has not started
When is an APA fulfilled?
When the move is completed
Under what circumstances would a driver receive an Alternative Proceed Authority?
When the signalling system cannot provide a Proceed, due to malfunction or irregularity (within mixed mode signalling parameters)
An APA can only authorise a train movement to the: (5)
- Next fixed signal
- Next CBTC block marker board
- Disabled train
- Buffer light
- Platform
APAs must only be issued: (5)
- To one train at a time
- Via a recorded line
- In accordance with Safety Critical procedure
- When the affected train is stationary
- Assisting a disabled train
