S9: Formation Of Lymphoid Cells Flashcards
What two types of immunity are T and B lymphocytes responsible for?
Cell-mediated immunity
Humoral immunity
What is humoral immunity?
Is due to the presence of antibodies (IgG and IgM) in the bloodstream. Occurs by B lymphocytes producing specific antibodies upon exposure through illness or vaccination
What is cell-mediated immunity?
A branch of the immune system where cells, rather than antibodies, play the predominant role. T lymphocytes are stimulated to reproduce when they encounter foreign antigens.
What is a toxoid?
A toxin treated to destroy its toxicity without destroying antigenicity
What are the four basic types of immune defence mechanisms against infectious agents?
- Native Defense Mechanisms
- Humoral Immunity
- Cell-mediated Immunity
- Mucosal Immunity
What does GALT stand for?
Gut associated lymphoid tissue
