S3: Body Anatomy And Disease Resistance Flashcards
What are the three layers of skin?
- Epidermis
- Dermis
- Underlying layer of subcutaneous tissue (hypodermis)
What are the two layers of epidermis skin?
- Stratum corneum
- Stratum germinativum
What is the stratum corneum?
A superficial, non-vascular, cornified layer that is constantly being shed and replaced
What is the stratum germinativum?
An actively growing layer, below the stratum corneum in the epidermis. Melanocytes, which produce melanin, are found in this layer.
What is the dermis?
Below the epidermis, contains arteries, veins, capillaries, lymphatics, and nerve fibres
What is the hypodermis?
A subcutaneous layer below the dermis that consists of connective and adipose tissue
What are the three integumentary system functions?
- Provide a protective barrier for the body
- A sense organ (touch and feeling)
- A site for vitamin D synthesis
What is keratin?
A protein in the skin that acts as a waterproofing agent and a barrier against bacteria
What is the normal, ideal pH of the skin and what keeps is that way?
The normal pH of the skin is between 3-4 (acidic). Fatty acids work to keep it that way
What is epithelial?
The type of tissue that line the internal passageways that open to the exterior
What are the three shapes of a epithelial cells?
- Cube (cuboidal)
- Column (columnar)
- Elongated and flattened (squamous)
What is lysozyme?
An enzyme in tears that destroys certain types of bacteria
