S8: Immunobiology Cont'd Flashcards

1
Q

What percent of protein does the serum fraction contain and what are they?

A

The serum fraction contains 6 - 7% protein in a healthy animal, with half of the protein being albumin and the other half being globulin

Q

What is primary immune response?

A

Occurs the very first time the adaptive response engages a particular substance (antigen) and only then

Q

What is IgM?

A

The largest immunoglobulin and the first to appear in an antibody response. A product of B-lymphocytes that is secreted during the primary immune response. Enhances phagocytosis of bacteria or viruses.

Q

What is IgG?

A

Produced after the production of IgM antibodies, mostly during the secondary immune response. Neutralizes toxins and viral antigens.

Q

What is IgD?

A

Has application in cancer diagnosis in humans. It’s activates lymphocytes and is found on lymphocyte membranes, where its primary role is an antigen receptor for B cells.

16
Q

What is IgE?

A

Responsible for the allergic response and boosts local inflammatory reactions.

17
Q

What are immunopathological disorders?

A

Results from inappropriate or inadequate immune responses, and are labelled as hypersensitivities, autoimmune reactions, or immunodeficiencies.

18
Q

What is an immunodeficiency?

A

The lack of all or part of the immune system’s function and may be fatal.
