What are the two types of phagocytes?
Free and fixed phagocytes
What are free phagocytes?
Phagocytes that circulate in the blood and are free to migrate anywhere in the body as required
What are fixed phagocytes?
Cells of the reticuloendothelial system (RES) that monitor the blood circulating through the RES
What is the reticuloendothelial system (RES)?
A large system made up of cells located in the spleen and liver, bone marrow, and connective tissue.
What is a phagosome?
A membrane within a phagocyte that surrounds engulfed foreign particles
What are lysosomes?
Little sacs of digestive enzymes within the cytoplasm of a phagocyte
