Why do the rules of conduct matter for members?
The RICS Rules of Conduct set out clear guidelines, responsibilities, values and expectations.
They provide a consistent benchmark for all surveyors.
Explain your understanding of Rule 1.
Having reviewed the example behaviours, Rule 1 requires members and firms to:
- not be improperly influenced through acceptance of work referrals, gifts or hospitality.
- Identify conflicts of interest, and not provide service or advice where these conflicts occur.
Explain your understanding of Rule 2.
Having reviewed the example behaviours, Rule 2 requires members and firms to:
- Only undertake work that they have the knowledge, skills and resources to carry out.
- Stay up to date with relevant legislation, codes of practice and other relevant standards.

- Understand clients needs and objectives before accepting work.
- Keep clients updated and seek their agreement if it is proposed to change the terms of engagement or estimated fees.

Why did the previous Rules of Conduct change?
In 2007, it was voted to replace the old rules of conduct with a single document to provide greater clarity.
There is a greater focus on clearer example behaviours, understanding evolving tech and tackling climate change.
