What is peer review?
Scrutiny by experts of research papers to determine scientific validity
What is it usual for during peer review?
Several expert reviewers to be sent copies of the research paper by a journal editor
What do reviewers do?
Report back to the editor highlighting weaknesses/problemed areas as well as improvements

Accept paper unconditionally

Accept it as long as the researcher makes certain improvements

Involves the names of reviewers not being revealed to the researcher

Unbiased review free from interferences by the researcher
What is there a danger of with anonymous reviewers?
They may delay the review process so their work can be published first
What is a double-blind review?
Involves both researchers and reviewers both being known to each other
What does a double-blind review reduce the risk of?
Reduces the risk of personal comments and plagiarism and encourages open and honest reviewing
