What is a controlled observation?
Takes place in a highly controlled environment
What is a naturalistic observation?
Takes place in people’s natural environment with no control
What is a covert observation?
Takes place without the knowledge or awareness of participants
What is an overt observation?
Takes place with full knowledge
What is a participant observation?
Data gathered by the psychologists whilst being part of observed group
What is a non participant observation?
Data gathered from a distance without psychologist being involved in observed group
Strengths of a controlled observation?
- control
- easy to establish cause and effect

Strengths of a covert observation?
- Valid results
- natural behaviour

- ethically sound

- greater insight into behaviour
