Reliability Flashcards
What does internal reliability describe?
The extent to which a measure is consistent within itself
How can internal reliability be checked?
Split half method
What is the split half method?
Test is randomly divided into two so that each half is equivalent
When is internal reliability demonstrated?
If participants scores are similar on both halves of the split-half method
What is item analysis?
Performance on each item is compared with overall score - good positive correlation = high internal reliability
What does external reliability describe?
The extent to which a measure varies from one use to another
How can external reliability be checked?
Test-re test
What is test-re test?
The same person is tested twice over a period of time - similar scores demonstrates high external reliability
What is inter-observer reliability?
Ratings from more than one person are correlated to check for agreement - if correlation is low = poorly designed categories/poorly trained observers
What is inter-interviewer reliability?
Different interviewers should produce the same result when interviewing the same person - if results aren’t same suggests that they are behaving differently - need more training
What is replication?
Any study should produce similar findings if repeated
