Experimental Design Flashcards
What is an independent groups design?
Each participant takes part in only one of the conditions
What is a repeated measures design?
Each participant takes part in all conditions
What is counterbalancing used for?
To reduce order effects by ensuring that participants variables occur with equal frequency in all conditions
What is randomisation?
Using chance to decide the order which participants experience the experiment
What is a matched pairs design?
Participants in each condition of the experiment are matched according to important variables
Strengths of an independent groups design?
- no order effects
- saving of time and effort
- demand characteristics reduced
Limitations of an independent groups design?
- participant variables
- twice as many participants needed
Strengths of a repeated measures design?
- fewer participants
- participant variables not a concern
Limitation of a repeated measures design?
-risk of order effects
Strengths of a matched pairs design?
- good control of participant variables
- eliminates order effects
Limitation of matched pairs design?
-marching participants is difficult
