Vocationalism/apprenticeships

A

intoduced in the 80s (work based learning) aimed to raise standards of working class/ those not in maintstream education. Thatcher shut the mines so millions were unemployed and new vocationalise created as a way to fix this as meant bad economy and not globally competitive. Left wing critical of these as says it’s just trying to mask or fix unemployment but in reality they only learn basic skills for low wages/ be exploited. In 2015 David Cameron re launched these as apprenticeships

Free schools

A

An example of parentocracy. Gov.uk says free schools are ‘set up in areas that they are needed’. Set up by often middle class parents, need a good knowledge of education, qualifications so often set up in middle class areas and have a lot of funding/ technology available

A

S tate funded but gain more money than state schools (12.5k a head compared to 3-5k in state). Have to sit the 11+ and mainly benefit the middle classes as they have the means to pay for tutors and gain an Elitest form of education for their children

A

tory brought in linear a level in 2016/15, more rigorous testing and content and assessed at the end of two years rather than the modular approach intoduced by labour.
