What is under new vocationalism (meeting needs of economy)
Youth training scheme, NVQs and GNVQs
The youth training scheme
Started by margret thatcher, offered employment training to get NEETs (not in employment, education or training) back into work. Targeted at 16-18 year olds, mostly working class. Guarantees up to a years foundation training to help the, gain work based skills they need and keep jobs, also remove threat of unemployment first year of leaving school. Evaluation-if they didn’t accept training, they took away job seekers allowance but very exploitative as given low wage
National vocational qualifications (NVQs)
1986- assessment lead quals that focused on specific vocations. Work based learning e..g plumbing, electricians
General national vocational qualifications (GNVQ)
On the job training work based learning as well as classroom teaching (academic as well as practical skills) examples-health and social, travel and tourism
What was introduced under the education reform act 1988 (raising standards)
National curriculum, sats, league tables, ofsted
National curriculum
Standardised and free education to all, aimed to ensure minimum level of education for everyone leaving school
Sats
Raise standards for all students, assessed quality of education and tracked progress to test if students were working at a certain level -standardised testing
League tables
Based on grades achieved by students-Introduced marketisation of education, schools run like businesses competing for customers. Raises competition between schools and colleges as compete to be the best which raises standards
Ofsted
Element of quality assurance that the level of education us suitable
