Miller
Choice in schools is an illusion, poorer pupils have less choice as can’t move/travel to better schools. Academically selective and faith schools have lower proportions of fsm and ethnic minorities (decreases choice), refers to the which survey-40% of parents don’t feel they had an active choice in deciding what school to send their children to and some face obstacles such as high house prices near good schools or unfair admissions criteria. M.c have escape route of independent sector which W.c.
Bourdieu
Social and economic capital help with choice as parents can network with other parents e.g. governors to help children gain school places. Economic means they can pay for tutors, move house but lack of capital limits choice for W.c
Gerwitz
Middle class parents are privileged skilled choosers but working class are disconnected choosers as don’t have right knowledge to make informed choice of school. Cultural capital impacts ablity to choose best schools
Byrne
Migrant parents are less able to access info about schools and are restricted by application dates and disadvantaged by a lack of local knowledge (can’t make informed school choice)
Raey and Lucy
Ethnic monitory pupils are more likely to attend schools with high proportions of ethnic minority Ohio’s as fear safer (cultural comfort zones) even if meant worse performing school-choice is limited
Wragg
Victorian railway carriage metaphors for education system. 1st class is the upper class who go to eton=harrow then oxbridge, 2nd class is middle class who go to grammar/outstanding comps then to Russel group unis and 3rd class is the working class who go to unsatisfactory comps then to other unis/polytechnics- deprived backgrounds have less choice about what type of school/uni to go to
