More concerned with shaping government policy to ensire equality of opportunity. Influenced policy 1944-79. Believe meritocracy is desirable and education should fairly allocate those most able to most important positions regardless of class/gender/ethnicity.nthink equality is possible in bounds of capitalism , poly that readdresses inequality e.g. compensatory education . Linked to labour policies 1997
Equality of opportunity - Halsey
believed that middle class children were more likely to get places in grammar schools (as have to sit 11+ which requires economic capital for textbooks and tutors) and believe a new system should be implemented to provide greater equality of opportunity (comps were intro’d in 60s to replace tripartite system)
Labour policies/compensatory education-sure start
Introduced in 1988 to provide additional funding at nursery ages to those from lowest classes to ensure a sure start. Centres were set up in deprived areas with additional support to parents as look after children 0-4
. Tested hearing/eyesight and did sensory activities
Labour compensatory education-city academies
The first form of academy was targeted at failing schools or in areas that were deprived or had crime. Had funding from the government and local business sponsors

30/week for under £20,817. 20/week for £21-25,500. 10/week for 25-31,000.for most deprived students to help them gain qualifications in further education via travel, textbooks and trips (although gave cash in hand at the end of the week so likely misspent
