Role Of Education- Feminist Flashcards
Kelly
science is packaged as a boys subject as textbooks have pictures of boys and male interests such as football or cars and teachers let boys dominate the classroom by grabbing equipment and shouting out answers
Colley
subject choices are affected by perception of gender roles (extent of socialisation of gender roles), subject preferences (based on perception of tasks and activities required e.g. girls dislike independent work and want discussion based subjects such as sociology) and learning environment (of the school is mixed or gender split)
Skelton
the hidden curriculum is responsible for gender differences in subject choices. The formal curriculum teaches core subjects, topics taught in state controlled schools. Subjects like history are often white and male centred. The hidden curriculum: gender split of teachers and students on different subjects, lack of girls in professions like stem and stereotypes surrounding gender.
Heaton and Lawson
concept of cultural transmission shows how culture (expectations of genders) can be transmitted between generations. Argue the hidden curriculum is a source of gender socialisation via: books and textbooks (women portrayed as dependent and general absence of women in science texts). Female students made to feel uncomfortable in some subjects where boys colonise the space eg computing and teachers fail to intervene. Teachers expectations like boys asked to move furniture and girls to wash up. Patriarchal curriculum where boys sports are recognised not girls and alevel subject choices are gender specific. Lack of positive role models as more female teachers but more men in senior positions and few black female teachers.
